At SiT we’re committed to ensuring you are aware of ALL the legal options pertaining to the abuse you’ve experienced and that any action you take should be based on your choice. We feel very strongly that you should be able to be given all your options and make an informed decision when deciding what it is you would like to do.
- Reporting to the Police
We can support you to report to the police if this is something you wish to do. We can arrange for a specially trained officer to take a first account at our centre, and we can arrange to support you at interviews and subsequent appointments.
We can support you to access an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) who can provide direct practical and emotional support, information and advice from the time you report right through to court, if you’re considering reporting your abuse.
- We can support you to attend Suffolk’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) The Ferns (link) if you wish to have evidence taken or a forensic medical examination. We can also arrange for you to give an Anonymous Intelligence statement to a trained support worker if you feel that’s what you would feel comfortable doing.
You will have the choice of whether you want to report to the police of have your evidence securely stored while you decide what’s right for you.
- Compensation (Civil Claims)
SiT has a partnership with Gotelee Solictors to help survivors who may wish to pursue a legal claim for compensation in respect of the abuse they suffered and can provide information about the legal options for survivors of sexual abuse. Survivors of sexual abuse often believe that they are not entitled to compensation if the abuse happened many years ago. It is important to understand that this is not correct and it is indeed possible to be successful in obtaining justice and compensation for survivors of non recent sexual abuse.
- Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) Claims
We can assist with information around the process of applying for CICA.
